Using performance management technology to address problems on the horizon

As an IT professional, you know how easy it is to get bogged down in day-to-day infrastructure management and neglect the ongoing health of your system — until you’re forced to deal with a major problem. Acquiring definitive insight into the performance of your IT systems is critical, but despite the need for it, gaining holistic visibility and staying one step ahead can be challenging. The meteoric rise of virtualization and cloud computing in recent years has led to increased complexity in the IT world, demanding that IT professionals know more information about more technologies at an increasingly rapid pace. Nearly every company can be considered a technology company, whether it provides a product or solution that is firmly in the technology realm or it is a small business with an online e-commerce function. In addition to technology being ubiquitous, consumer expectations have skyrocketed. End users want to be able to access their applications anywhere, at any time and from any device. This enormous demand requires a company’s storage, networks and systems to run at peak performance levels to prevent disruption of the customer experience.

In pursuit of deeper, more real-time transparency, holistic, ongoing performance management is key. To ultimately have faster, more cost-effective performance management, there are multiple considerations, including what type of silos, servers, applications and networks an IT team is monitoring. Because management expects that downtime will be virtually nonexistent (most industries today demand 24/7 operability with 99999s availability), IT professionals need to consider investing in a robust performance management tool to anticipate problems and prevent downtime, which would be a costly situation.

There are several performance management options that provide varying levels of insight. The best approaches leverage an infrastructure performance management platform to provide the highest level of visibility and include predictive analysis features, automated reporting mechanisms, centralized monitoring and vendor-neutral management.

Performance obstacles are plentiful in the data center. As optimization grows more complex, organizations need to keep in mind that to maximize the performance and availability of their entire IT infrastructure — with legacy and modern systems tied together — total visibility into the system plays a huge role in providing the IT team with the insight necessary to prevent and overcome problems before they impact performance.
