3 steps to proactive infrastructure performance management

Infrastructure complexity isn’t often the focal point of discussions related to speed of the digital economy. Sales teams, marketers and others rely on IT to deliver premium solutions and capability that make their businesses attractive options for customers or partners for other companies. A financial services firm is more than happy to tell clients how quickly they can complete their transaction requests and how reliable their ecosystem is. For IT, the goal becomes maintaining high performance while guaranteeing the availability of data needed to complete requests.

Understanding answers to historical performance problems

For most companies, there’s a bit of predictability to the workloads and events in their infrastructures. All of those I/Os produce performance data that creates a picture of the system that can be used to help assess and solve any problems that arise in the future. For example, if the origin of a bottleneck was a period of increased activity, recognizing how to fix that will be critical when it inevitably comes up again down the line. Once a root cause to the problem is identified, make adjustments to the application infrastructure to avoid those problems moving forward.

Unwavering focus on the end user

Whether an application’s end users are customers or co-workers, they need the applications to function properly. End users aren’t interested in the reasons for a delay. They just want their transactions to go through or a client file to load when they need to access it. For IT, the challenge becomes guaranteeing both performance and availability. The answer can’t be overprovisioning, either. Dialing up new capacity or VMs every time latency doubles or a system fails is expensive and doesn’t really solve the problem. Analyzing performance data and finding real answers to optimize infrastructure keeps end users happy and IT focused on more significant tasks to support the enterprise.

Solutions focused on answers, not data or vendors

IT infrastructure in 2015 features components from a number of vendors. Infrastructure performance management (IPM) must analyze and assess data from every component without favor or prejudice. Holistic visibility means understanding workflows and systemwide utilization. Performance monitoring solutions designed to focus on a certain aspect of the infrastructure won’t help IT teams solve problems in 2015. What’s more, tools that only collect and present performance data set the stage for the fingerpointing and blame that has plagued IT for years.

Agility is at the heart of IT in 2015. End users expect applications to work, and it’s up to IT to deliver on that without question. Proactively monitoring performance and preparing to provide answers to IT challenges keep businesses running optimally and IT workers in front of, instead of chasing, their challenges.
