Bimodal IT shift necessitates proactive performance management

Last year, Gartner detailed the concept of “bimodal IT,” which, quite simply, divides IT into two arenas: one is the traditional support and security role, and one calls for extensive innovation and constant improvement of business processes. Even as the first mode concerned with stability and consistency will always exist in some capacity, the second mode is quickly becoming the default operating procedure in an IT landscape driven by proactive development and speed. With the ongoing push toward rapidly evolving and dynamic infrastructures, the need for answers to the most complex IT performance issues is only becoming more evident.

The second mode of IT has called for both new skill sets from IT professionals and new technologies to manage the transition. Aside from the applications developed to make workloads faster and businesses more efficient, the way IT teams manage their infrastructures to support these tasks has to evolve as well. Modern infrastructure performance management (IPM) has to be about addressing issues as they arise to keep operations moving forward. Actionable insights that lead to direct solutions makes troubleshooting a leaner, more agile process, which is precisely what the rest of IT is hoping to achieve.

Adjustments to IT in the name of this agility has to include these updates to problem solving. As IT integrates new solutions and operations, there needs to be an understanding of how to fix issues in real time to avoid unnecessary overprovisioning or some of the other traditional answers to performance problems. Treating the diagnosis of IT issues as something separate from the rest of the department wastes time and money. Agility is what every organization strives for, and it’s just as crucial for performance management (if not more so) as it is for every other IT facet.

Part of Gartner’s thoughts on bimodal IT deal with the possible issues IT is facing as it speeds toward an agility-focused department. Applying the same mentality to IT performance in 2015 as businesses did 10 years ago is at the heart of so many problems. Nearly every other aspect of IT has shifted in the face of new technologies. Trying to guarantee availability and optimize activities without proactive procedures that are as agile as the rest of IT makes it difficult to see the real benefits of the new paradigm brought about by bimodal IT.
